Tukwila Sewer Utility

The City of Tukwila was incorporated in 1908 as a small community near the Duwamish River that included 418 acres of land adjacent to what is now known as Interurban Avenue South. The City of Tukwila operated a sewage lagoon system located in the Southcenter area until 1965. When Metro opened the Renton Wastewater Treatment Plant in 1965 the lagoon system was abandoned and the sewer system was connected to the Metro system for treatment. No formal sanitary sewer system existed in the residential areas until the formation of the some of the larger Local Improvement Districts (LIDs) which were begun in 1961. Throughout the 1960’s, Tukwila experienced rapid expansion by the use of LIDs and developer extension agreements.

The existing sewer system serves approximately 1500 customer accounts and consists of at least 30 miles of concrete pipe with some portions of PVC, asbestos cement, cast iron, and ductile iron mains. The City of Tukwila owns and operates eight (8) sewage lift stations within its sewage collection system. The City is actively seeking solutions to maintenance problems that plague the existing system such as grease accumulation from existing restaurants, and infiltration of groundwater or surface water. These problems put additional load on treatment facilities and lift stations.

If you are in an area that is currently not served by formal sanitary sewer facilities and have questions regarding septic systems, please call the King County Department of Public Health at (206) 296-4932. They may have an as-built drawing which shows where your septic tank is located, and can provide you with information about how to maintain your on-site disposal system.
