Public Defender Information

Persons charged with a criminal offense may be eligible for a public defender if they qualify financially. (RCW 10.101) If you have been charged with a crime at Tukwila Municipal Court and cannot afford an attorney you may request a public defender. Applications are available at the Tukwila Municipal Court or you may download the application online.

Public Defender Screening takes place on Mondays from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. In order to expedite the process, please complete the application and come to court with copies of all supporting documentation. If you qualify, your case will be assigned to a public defender and you will be given their contact information. If you have any questions about Public Defender Screening please call (206) 433-1858 on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. For all other Court questions please call the Clerk's Office at (206) 433-1840 Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

As a client of the public defender you have important rights. The Washington State Supreme Court has adopted standards for the conduct of public defenders and guidelines for the provision of services provided to you by a public defender. The Clients Rights notice is provided to you as a client of the public defender to make you aware of your rights under these standards and advise you on actions to take if you think your rights, as outlined below, have been violated.

Comments or Complaints

If you have concerns, contact your public defender. If the public defender is unable to address your concern you may complete a Comment Form or Complaint Form and submit them to the City Administrator’s office at 6200 Southcenter Blvd in Tukwila or by email to publicdefense@tukwilawa.gov.
