Sister City Affiliation With Miyoshi, Japan

In 1978 the City of Tukwila declared its intention to create a Sister City Program. On November 19, 1979, the City passed Resolution #701 establishing formal affiliation with Ikawa-cho Japan. The mission of the program, as stated in resolutions adopted by both cities, is to foster international peace, harmony and goodwill through understanding and tolerance. The program's emphasis has been focused on youth and education.

In 1984 a Sister City Committee was formed to assist in the planning and preparation of Sister City events. Citizens from Ikawa have visited Tukwila on 11 difference occasions, staying in the homes of families in our area. Tukwila citizens of all ages have also visited Japan 9 times. The last delegation of Tukwila students and adults to travel to Ikawa was in April of 2005.

In March of 2006, Ikawa merged with five other surrounding cities to form the new city of Miyoshi. Because of our former alliance with Ikawa, we have continued the Sister City relationship with Miyoshi, but we also now share this relationship with The Dalles, Oregon, who previously had a Sister City affiliation with Ikeda, one of the other merging cities. The first official delegation from Miyoshi arrived for a very brief visit in Tukwila in August of 2007.

It was hoped a delegation from Tukwila could travel to Miyoshi in April of 2009, but current travel costs are prohibitive for the group. A year of fundraising will assist the student travelers with expenses, providing for the opportunity for the group to visit Miyoshi in April of 2010, which will be the 30th anniversary of the Sister City affiliation. A delegation of 17 middle-school students and several adults will be traveling to Tukwila on November 4-8, 2009. If you are interested in hosting a pair of students or in joining the 2010 delegation, please contact the Mayor's Office at 206-433-1844 or at sistercities@tukwilawa.gov.

The Sister Cities Program offers a unique and unequaled opportunity to establish friendships with people of a different culture. It has proven to be one of the most enjoyable and personally enriching programs offered in our community. If you have questions regarding the Sister Cities Program, please contact the Mayor's Office at 206-433-1844 or at sistercities@tukwilawa.gov.
